Driver Qualifications

While driving a school bus is not for everyone, it can be one of the most rewarding employment opportunities.

A driver gets the opportunity to be a large part of a child's life. Many drivers who remain on the same route for years get the chance to witness a child from the start of their school experience to the end. Not many people outside of a child's family will have this amazing experience. This is the perfect employment opportunity for many retired persons, self-employed, farming families and stay-at-home parents. So, if you possess some of the following attributes, this may be the career for you:

  • Have an interest in working with children

  • Be honest, trustworthy and patient

  • Enjoy driving

  • Possess cultural awareness and sensitivity

  • Have good time management and be flexible

  • Able to deal with the public and co-workers in a positive, courteous and respectful manner

  • No previous school bus driving experience necessary

To obtain your class 'B' school bus driver's licence, you must meet the following Ministry of Transportation (MTO) requirements:


  • Be at least 21 years of age

  • Obtain and meet medical and vision standards - this is at the cost of the applicant (costs vary from doctor to doctor) - if you wish to move forward quickly on this portion, Brenmar can provide a walk-in clinic number with doctors that specifically deal with MTO driver medical requirements

  • Pass both a vulnerable sector and criminal check - a criminal check will be initiated upon enrolling into the MTO approved Brenmar Driver's Training Program for Class 'B' Licence, a vulnerable sector search will be initiated once the individual has completed their class 'B' training

  • Have successfully completed a School Bus Driver Improvement Course (SBDIC), provided by Brenmar Transit - note: Brenmar has been certified to administer this MTO required course on behalf of Infrastructure Health and Safety (IHSA) ; this MTO requirement must be met within 90 days of obtaining your 'B' class licence in order to retain your 'B' classification

  • Successfully complete the MTO approved Brenmar Driver's Training Program for Class 'B' Licence, which includes passing an MTO approved written test and on-road driving test

  • Not be classed as a probationary or novice driver Have not accumulated more than 6 demerit points on his/her driving record (as per driver's abstract)

  • Not have had a driver's licence suspension at any time within the preceding 12 months as a result of having been convicted or found guilty of:

  • a. Driving under supension
    b. Speeding over 50 km above the speed limit (speed racing)
    c. Careless driving
    d. Racing on a highway
    e. Leaving the scene of an accident
    f. Not have been convicted or found guilty within the preceding 5 years of two or more offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, committed on different dates by means of a motor vehicles or while driving or having care and control of a motor vehicle
    g. Flight from police
    h. Not have been convicted or found guilty within the preceding five years under section 4 or 5 of the Narcotic Control Act of Canada
    i. Not have been convicted or found guilty within the preceding five years of certain sexual or moral offences under the Criminal Code of Canada
    j. Not have been convicted or found builty of any offence for conduct that affords reasonable grounds for believing that he/she will not properly perform his/her duties, or is not a proper person to have custody of children
